Kentucky Sepsis Consortium Webinar: Rethinking the Bolus: Dynamic Fluid Assessment as the Emerging Standard of Care in Sepsis Resuscitation
Hospitals across the country have invested heavily in sepsis bundle compliance, and many have gotten very good at it. But is compliance alone enough? Roughly one in three septic patients does not respond to fluids, and a growing body of evidence, including recent meta-analyses, Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidance, and CMS’s addition of ultrasound-based assessment, points to dynamic fluid assessment as the evolving standard of care in resuscitation.
In this session, Jaclyn Bond, RN, a former Director of Nursing at a large, publicly funded community hospital, shares her team’s clinical, financial, and operational journey from uniform 30 mL/kg bolusing to goal-directed, patient-specific fluid therapy. She’ll walk through the hemodynamic technologies her team evaluated, what worked and what didn’t at the bedside, how a nurse-driven dynamic assessment workflow fit into existing practice, and the outcomes observed in her hospital’s evaluation, including impact on SEP-1 performance and downstream complications such as AKI and mechanical ventilation.
Presenter: Jaclyn Bond served as Director of Nursing at a publicly funded hospital in Southern California, where she oversaw eight specialty teams and built a nursing-led sepsis emergency response team from the ground up. She co-authored the SAGE Open Medicine paper describing that model, which reviews how nurse-led sepsis response teams affect bundle compliance and patient outcomes. She earned an MS in Nursing Leadership and an MBA in Healthcare Management. Her work focuses on how bedside teams can individualize sepsis resuscitation within the constraints of a real unit.
