Sepsis Consortium

The Kentucky Sepsis Consortium focuses on improving sepsis outcomes through collaborative learning to achieve appropriate, timely and reliable implementation of evidence-based interventions. To achieve this goal, Kentucky hospitals work together toward standardization of early detection and timely treatment of sepsis by engaging in development of multidisciplinary teams to embrace rapid cycle improvement and collaborative learning.

As part of this multi-center, multidisciplinary initiative, teams work to overcome complexities and accelerate improvements in care processes and patient outcomes through an “All teach, all learn” format, including webinars, site visits, discipline specific and team coaching.

As a result of these efforts, Kentucky has decreased sepsis- associated mortality, reduced morbidity from sepsis and is working to decrease the incidence of hospital-onset sepsis.

The Kentucky Sepsis Consortium Journey

2012: The Early Days

KHA logo

Kentucky Hospital Association (KHA) begins
actively assisting hospitals with sepsis work through education, data collection and reporting, quality improvement groups, and individual coaching.

2019: Sepsis Advocacy

Work began to create a statewide consortium of hospitals as a result of a sepsis survivor, Darrell Raikes, reaching out to his senator, Jimmy Higdon, to seek legislation to require certain activities with inspections and penalties attached.

2020: Consortium Established

KHA offered to create an improvement collaborative in lieu of proposed regulations. The Kentucky Sepsis Consortium was officially created on June 15.

Hospitals Join

There are 87 participating hospitals in the Consortium – 100% of Kentucky hospitals with an emergency department plus one additional facility.

2025: Sepsis Case Abstraction Office Hours

The KHA and Sepsis Consortium began the Sepsis Case Abstraction Office Hours. These sessions aim to support sepsis abstractors in accurately identifying Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock cases, crucial for patient safety, compliance, and reimbursement.

Where We Stand Today

KHA provides assistance and support with: screening tools, treatment protocols, interprofessional education, process & outcome metric collection, best practice processes, coaching, and data reports for assessing progress and benchmarking.
